Hi, I'm Andreas Loizou. I have spent fifteen years building AI-first software and leading the teams that ship it.

The short version.

I was born and raised in Cyprus, and I never left the problem-solving part.

I have been the engineer, the CTO, the founder, the trainer, the consultant and the client. So I know what a demo hides, what a team can actually absorb, and how to get AI doing real work for people who have a company, a team, or a family to run.

I build.

BSc in Computer Science at the University of Cyprus, graduated top of my class. Then an MSc at Oxford focused on machine learning and AI, at a time when that was an unusual thing to study. Since then I have built and led software for a major bank, for forex trading companies, and for defence and communications intelligence: places where "it mostly works" is not an answer. Fifteen years on, I still write code most weeks.

I lead.

I co-founded two AI startups before AI was the thing to do, Summarly AI and Deepconomy, both among the winners of EIT Digital. Then I founded QBeat Technologies, a software house in Cyprus, and grew it from one laptop to a team delivering for government and private clients from anywhere. Today I am also the fractional CTO of an AI-first consulting company, which keeps me building rather than only advising.

I teach.

I am the lead trainer at the QBeat Academy and an HRDA certified trainer, and I have trained and advised hundreds of people from dozens of companies. I speak at conferences, mentor at hackathons and have won a few. The teaching is not a side project: explaining a thing simply is how I find out whether I actually understand it.

Here are some of the values I live by.

Ship, then improve

A good plan that runs this week beats a perfect plan that runs next quarter. The same goes for AI: start with one workflow, make it boring and reliable, then expand.

Teach what you know

I became a certified trainer because too few people were teaching modern software practices where I live. Hundreds of trainees later, it still keeps me honest: if I cannot explain it simply, I do not understand it yet.

People first

Technology is at its best when it brings people together. I try to build teams and tools where both the people and the technology can flourish, and I judge my week by how much time I protected for my family.

I write to my son in Cypriot Greek

The first post on this blog is a letter to him on his first birthday, in the dialect I grew up with. Some things do not translate.

Oxford, then back to the island

I did my machine learning master's at Oxford and came home to build things in Cyprus. Larnaca is where I work from, usually with a coffee that has gone cold.

Certified to train, officially

Five months of training and an exam later, I became an HRDA certified trainer in 2020. Companies in Cyprus can have most of the cost of my trainings covered.

I still enter hackathons

Usually as a mentor, sometimes as a competitor, and I have won a few. Forty-eight hours with a whiteboard and a deadline is still my favourite way to learn a new tool.

I keep a yearly review

Every year I write down what worked, what did not, and what to avoid next year. Some of it ends up here.

The mouflon is not random

It is the wild ram of the Troodos mountains and the national animal of Cyprus. Stubborn, sure-footed and hard to spot. Good company for a consultant.
